On the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a group of Palestinian protestors knocked over a slab of the security barrier that divides the West Bank from the Gaza Strip.

This act of defiance would be powerful if it actually had merit. The Berlin Wall’s infamous reputation is largely characterized by it having been built to keep people in and ideas out.

Conversely, the separation barrier has effectively managed to prevent terror attacks against Israeli civilians. And not only that, democracy is championed by international forces on both sides of the wall and may flourish on both sides, as well.

While the separation wall (fence, hedge, whatever you want to call it) is by no means perfect, it has managed to fulfill its purpose- keeping terror at bay, an effect that both sides should be happy about.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, the fall of the Berlin Wall involved thousands of people hoping over the barrier and reuniting with friends and family on the other side. 300 people showed up at Fridays protest.

Now, the details of the wall should be fixed, such as how certain towns are cut down the middle and how the wall represents a defacto border for a future Palestinian state, even though portions of the barrier are well-within the Palestinian side of the green line.
